i think some themes like "photo restoration" can't have a source, or maybe have a specific source selected for that contest.

I prefer competitions where an image is given. It's always fun to see where others take a given image and having a common source really adds to the interest. I think a mix of given sources and no source would work for themed competition. Mix it up a bit and offer both choices at random, (including photo restoration). In fact, this might be an excellent way of bringing in site revenue, if outsiders were interested in offering a photo to be restored that we all attack together.

As someone new to all this source image is extremely important to me for a number of reasons. 1) It's really helpful in the voting process. 2) It is enjoyable to see 3) It's as if I have a great set of teachers showing me how to better myself as I explore their work. ..I hadn't even considered site revenue but if it helps in any way I am for it.

Source images are always a challenge and interesting to see what others come up with. Photo restoration should have a source image also.
